Grand Council Treaty#3 Expression of Condolences to Gord Downie Family
“On behalf of the Anishinaabe Nation of Treaty#3, I would like to extend our condolences to the family of Gord Downie and our thanks to the Downie family for sharing Gord with us. We are all deeply saddened by his passing.”, stated Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh.
Gord Downie was an amazing musician who connected to others through his songs. The Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty#3 is honoured by all of Gord Downie’s efforts to acknowledge a dark chapter of Canadian history and the Indian Residential School system and in particular the story of Chanie Wenjack, who died from hunger and exposure trying to make his way home from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School.
At a time when he was facing his own challenges, Gord remained a strong social justice advocate. Our Nation will remember and honour his legacy and are forever grateful for all he has done in the efforts of Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
