Grand Council Treaty #3 Commemorates the 153rd Anniversary of the Signing of Treaty #3
Today, Grand Council Treaty #3 commemorates the 153rd anniversary of the signing of Treaty #3, Manidoo Mazina’igan – The Sacred Document, signed on October 3, 1873, between the Anishinaabe Nation and the Crown.
On this significant day, we honour the wisdom, strength, and determination of our Anishinaabe ancestors who negotiated the Treaty to protect our lands, waters, rights, and way of life for future generations.
Treaty #3 is more than a historic agreement. It is a living Treaty that continues to guide our relationship with the Crown and reminds us of our collective responsibilities to our people, our communities, and our traditional territory.
“As we commemorate the signing of Treaty #3, we honour our ancestors and the sacrifices they made for our Nation. Their strength, wisdom, and determination remind us of the responsibilities entrusted to us. Honouring the spirit and intent of our Treaty requires continued dedication, unity, and a commitment to protecting our rights and preserving our way of life for future generations,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh.
As we reflect on this historic day, we recognize our ongoing responsibility to uphold our inherent and Treaty rights, honour the commitments made by our ancestors, and work collectively to ensure that the spirit and intent of Treaty #3 guide our actions and decisions for generations to come.
