Grand Council Treaty #3 Congratulates Roseanne Archibald on National Chief Election

Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh and Grand Council Treaty #3 congratulate Roseanne Archibald on her election to the role of National Chief this past Thursday.

“It is never easy to put your name forward for any elected position and the role of National Chief is one of the most daunting,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “I worked with Roseanne while she was Ontario Regional Chief and I know that her initiatives to increase the role of women in our leadership struck a chord with Treaty #3, where so many of our chiefs are women.”

After five ballots, with Archibald receiving 205 votes to Reginald Bellerose’s 144 votes, Bellrose conceded the election leaving Archibald with the distinction of being the first female National Chief in addition to her previous achievement of becoming the first female Ontario Regional Chief.

As the national election concludes, Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh and Grand Council Treaty #3 also acknowledge outgoing National Chief Perry Bellegarde for his years of service with the Assembly of First Nations.

“As National Chief Bellegarde provided space for the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 at the Assembly of First Nations Executive Committee, we have been able to observe the work being done at AFN under the leadership of Perry Bellegarde,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “The job of a National Chief will never be easy, but through thick and thin, for better or worse, even during a global pandemic, National Chief Perry Bellegarde never wavered in his work on behalf of all of our nations.”

Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh plans to work closely with National Chief Roseanne Archibald to ensure that the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 remains apprised of national issues and is able to provide advice when and where appropriate.
