Grand Chief of Treaty #3 Francis Kavanaugh offers his deepest condolences to the friends and family of Chief Simon Fobister

Kenora — Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh, Grand Chief of Treaty #3 offers his deepest condolences to the friends and family of Chief Simon Fobister and to the entire circle of community of Grassy Narrows First Nation.

Simon Fobister was a former Chief of the Grassy Narrows and a tireless and dedicated advocate for his First Nations’ right to clean water and compensation after it was discovered that mercury was dumped in the waterways near his community nearly 60 years ago.

Fobister was a strong and outspoken leader for the northern Ontario community playing an instrumental role in advocating for proper health care for a community including the construction of a treatment centre arguing it was critical for them to get the medical help they need closer to home.

“He was a true leader in his community and an inspiration to so many and his legacy will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and community. We lift him up and offer our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh.
