Grand Council Treaty #3 Calls Upon Its Citizens to Limit Travel and Gatherings

With the recent spike in cases in Treaty #3 communities and several First Nations entering into lockdown this week, Grand Council Treaty #3 and Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh are calling upon citizens of the Anishinaabe Nation to limit social gathering.

Citizens are advised to avoid travelling across the Ontario-Manitoba border and limit travel within their province as much as possible. Travelling within the Treaty #3 territory should be for only the most essential needs.

“We have done well throughout the pandemic, and I am very proud of our people for keeping our communities safe by obeying social distancing and their community rules,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “But we all have to slow things down again to ensure we do not lose anyone to this terrible virus.”

Listening to public health officials and observing community rules and guidelines is the most effective way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is especially important that citizens respect the restrictions put in place by other communities.

Collective action is needed by communities to limit the spread by staying home and limiting social interaction. Citizens are reminded that the Treaty #3 territory does not have the medical infrastructure or emergency response capacity to handle a large-scale outbreak.  It is therefore duty of each citizen to protect our communities by limiting their activities so that a winter of pandemic may turn into an early spring.
