Grand Council Treaty #3 Welcomes Decision to Establish Permanent Daylight Saving Time

October 13, 2026

Grand Council Treaty #3 welcomes the Government of Ontario’s announcement to move Northwestern Ontario to permanent Daylight Saving Time, effective November 1, 2026, aligning with Manitoba’s decision to discontinue seasonal clock changes.

During the Grand Council Treaty #3 Fall Assembly, hosted by Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, the Treaty #3 Chiefs-in-Assembly passed Resolution CA-26-12: Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 Support for Permanent Daylight Savings Time on October 1, 2026, formally supporting a unified approach to time across Treaty #3 Territory.

As Treaty #3 Territory spans Northwestern Ontario and eastern Manitoba, Manitoba’s decision to adopt permanent Daylight Saving Time raised concerns about the potential division of the Territory into multiple time zones. Such a change would create unnecessary challenges for Treaty #3 citizens who rely on access to essential services, programs, and resources across provincial boundaries.

Through this resolution, the Chiefs-in-Assembly reaffirmed the importance of maintaining consistency across the Territory while ensuring that decisions affecting the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 recognize the interconnectedness of its communities and respect the needs of its citizens.

Grand Council Treaty #3 acknowledges the collective efforts of First Nations leadership, communities, regional partners, and the Government of Ontario in reaching a decision that reflects the shared interests of the region. This announcement represents a positive step toward maintaining consistency and accessibility for all those living and working across Treaty #3 Territory.
