Grand Council Treaty #3 Extends its Deepest Condolences to the Family, Friends, and Community of Chief Lorraine Cobiness

November 13, 2025

With heavy hearts, Grand Council Treaty #3 extends our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and community of Niisaachewan, for the passing of Chief Lorraine Cobiness. Chief Cobiness has been a shining light in life and leadership, and it is with great sadness that we share this news.

Serving her ninth consecutive term as Chief of Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation, we honour the immense contributions she has made in her community and in Treaty #3. Chief Cobiness was a true leader, one who led with kindness, love, and compassion. No matter how tense discussions became, she would always speak with dignity and respect. We honour her continued dedication to the betterment of our Nation.

Above all else, we honour the strong, kind, and wonderful person she was. We will remember her voice of wisdom, her caring heart, and her unwavering sense of bravery to stand up for what is right. We remember her as a friend and leader whose spirit will continue to guide us; we are honoured to live in her legacy.

She was a true warrior, who we are going to miss.
