Grand Council Treaty #3 Condemns Full Parole for Brayden Bushby in the Death of Barbara Kentner
Grand Council Treaty #3 stands firmly with Barbara Kentner’s family and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation in condemning the decision to grant full parole to Brayden Bushby, who was convicted of manslaughter in Barbara’s death.
Barbara was a member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation whose life was taken following a senseless and violent act. Her family, community, and Nation have carried the pain and consequences of that violence for years. This decision is deeply troubling and is another painful reminder of the failures our people continue to experience within the Canadian justice system.
Grand Council Treaty #3 fully supports Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation Chief and Council in their call for justice and accountability.
“We stand with Barbara’s family and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. The decision to grant full parole to the person responsible for Barbara’s death is a miscarriage of justice and sends an unacceptable message to our people,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “Our people should not have to continually fight to have our lives valued and our families treated with dignity by the justice system. We expect justice. We expect accountability. And we will continue to demand both.”
Grand Council Treaty #3 joins Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation in calling upon the federal government and the Parole Board of Canada to confront the systemic failures that continue to deny Indigenous victims and their families meaningful justice. Our people deserve a justice system that values our lives, respects our rights, and holds those who commit violence against our people accountable.
We remember Barbara Kentner. We stand with her family and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. We will continue to demand justice and accountability for our people.
