Closing the Digital Gap in Treaty #3 Territory
The Grand Council Treaty #3 (GCT3) is proud to announce the Dibaajimowin Project, a collaborative initiative bringing high-speed fibre optic internet access to First Nation communities across Treaty #3 territory.
What is the Dibaajimowin Project?
The Dibaajimowin Project represents a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide for the Anishinaabe Nation of Treaty #3. Through partnerships with Bell Canada, the federal and provincial governments, the project is bringing reliable, high-speed internet to First Nations, empowering residents and businesses with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age.
Early Success: High-Speed Internet Now Available in Four Communities!
We are excited to announce that the first four Treaty #3 First Nations – Naicatchewenin, Wauzhushk Onigum, Couchiching, and Wabauskang – now have access to gold-standard fibre optic internet services. Residents and businesses in these communities can experience the benefits of high-speed internet, unlocking new opportunities in education, economic development, healthcare, and communication.
Project Timeline and Expansion
The Dibaajimowin Project is well underway, with construction schedules in place to connect an additional 17 First Nations and 13 non-Indigenous communities by the end of 2025. This project represents a joint investment of $12.3 million from the Ontario Improving Connectivity for Ontario program and $36.9 million from the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada Universal Broadband Fund program.
Looking Ahead: A Brighter Digital Future
The Dibaajimowin Project is more than just bringing internet access; it’s about creating a future of opportunity and connection for all Anishinaabe people in Treaty #3 territory. With high-speed internet, residents will have access to:
- Improved Education: Online learning resources and opportunities for distance education.
- Economic Growth: Support for web-based businesses and entrepreneurship.
- Enhanced Healthcare: Access to telemedicine and digital health services.
- Stronger Communities: Improved communication and connection with family, friends, and vital services.
