Grand Council Treaty #3 Mourns the Passing of Garnet Angeconeb

It is with great remorse that Grand Council Treaty #3 learns of the passing of Garnet Angeconeb of Lac Seul First Nation. Garnet was a regular attendee of many Grand Council Treaty #3 events and could regularly be found speaking with community leadership, staff, and government about his work. Over the years he worked with people from across Canada to share his own healing journey and to inform the public about the history of Residential Schools.

“I will very much miss speaking with Garnet at the many events we attended together,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “He always had great stories and great insights that in many ways helped me in my duties as Grand Chief. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Garnet’s family and the community of Lac Seul on their loss.”

As a recipient of the Order of Canada, Garnet was an outstanding advocate for Residential School survivors and brought much needed awareness to the history of past wrongs. Becoming Sioux Lookout’s first First Nation councillor in 1985 he worked tirelessly to advance the interests of not only Treaty #3 members but First Nations people from across the North. Despite many hardships, he always remained positive and helped many people on their own paths towards healing. Much of Grand Council Treaty #3’s work was undoubtedly made easier by Garnet’s advocacy and for this we will be forever grateful.
