The Role of the Gladue Writer

The Gladue Writer’s role focuses on the preparation of Gladue Reports for Indigenous individuals involved in sentencing procedures. These professionals carry the significant responsibility of compiling comprehensive life histories, including cultural background, community ties, and personal circumstances, as well as outlining the systemic factors, such as the impacts of colonialism, that have influenced the life of the individual. Through interviews, research, and compassionate storytelling, Gladue Writers articulate these narratives to assist courts in understanding the unique situations of Indigenous defendants, thereby promoting sentencing decisions that are informed, culturally sensitive, and supportive of restorative justice principles.

The Role of the Gladue Aftercare Caseworker

The Gladue Aftercare Worker provides support to Indigenous individuals after their interaction with the justice system. This program aims to provide holistic support and resources to help individuals reintegrate into their communities, prevent recidivism, and address the underlying issues that may have contributed to their legal troubles. The Gladue Aftercare Worker can assist with providing access to counselling, community support services, cultural programs, education and employment assistance, and other resources that align with restorative justice principles. It serves as a critical component in the broader effort to offer more culturally sensitive and effective justice and rehabilitation processes for Indigenous people in Canada.
