February 23, 2026

Grand Council Treaty #3 is pleased to acknowledge a major infrastructure announcement for Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation, which includes a $30 million investment toward the construction of a new water treatment plant, marking an important step toward complete access to safe drinking water for the community.

The announcement was made in the community by Minister Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation on February 19. Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh joined Chief Carrie Atatise-Norwegian and the Gakijiwanong Council, along with community Elders and members to celebrate the announcement.

Reliable access to safe drinking water is fundamental to the health, wellbeing, and future growth of First Nations communities. Investments in water treatment infrastructure have long been a priority and are essential to supporting families today while planning for future generations.

“It is always an honour to be invited to Gakijiwanong to see my many friends and family there,” said Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh. “On this occasion I was overjoyed to see the hard work of Chief Atatise-Norwegian and her council come to fruition with this announcement of a long-term solution to the community’s water security.”

Grand Council Treaty #3 recognizes the leadership and advocacy of Chief and Council and acknowledges the role of community Elders and members whose voices and lived experiences continue to guide the advancement of critical infrastructure projects across Treaty 3 territory.
