Grand Council Treaty #3 Offers Condolences on the Passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, CC, OM, MSC, Mizhana Gheezhik
Grand Council Treaty #3 expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, Mizhana Gheezhik, following his passing. His tireless work as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has made a profound impact on the journey toward healing and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Murray Sinclair was a trailblazer in the Canadian justice system, being the first Indigenous judge appointed in Manitoba and Canada’s second overall. He is widely recognized for his role as Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba and for his leadership as Chief Commissioner of the TRC. Through his participation in hundreds of hearings across Canada, he helped shape the TRC’s influential report in 2015, which has been instrumental in advancing the conversation around reconciliation and Indigenous rights.
Over a remarkable 40-year career in the justice system, Sinclair served as a lawyer advocating for Indigenous clients, an Adjunct Professor of Law at Robson Hall, Associate Chief Judge of Manitoba’s Provincial Court, and a Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench. As a proud Anishinaabe member of the Peguis First Nation, he dedicated his life to fighting for justice, education, and truth for Indigenous communities.
As we mourn his loss, we celebrate his remarkable contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. Grand Council Treaty #3 will continue to honour his memory by advancing understanding, respect, and justice for our Anishinaabe people. His spirit will live on in our collective efforts to create a better future for generations to come.
