Youth Reintegration, Intervention, and Diversion

Providing youth with opportunities for growth, redirection, and support to prevent further involvement in the justice system.

Youth Diversion

Youth Diversion is a program that helps First Nation youth aged 12-17 who have had some involvement with the justice system in Treaty #3. It empowers these young people with personalized guidance and support from their community, helping them learn from their experiences and move forward in a positive direction. Youth can enter the program through various channels, including referrals from the crown, educational institutions, law enforcement, their own communities, self or family referrals, and social services, particularly after minor offenses or exhibiting at-risk behaviours. Participation is voluntary, emphasizing the youth’s commitment to engagement, program guidelines, and the core values of honesty and respect.

Youth Intervention

The Youth Intervention Program (YIP) is a pioneering initiative for 12-17-year-olds from Treaty #3 First Nation, designed to steer youth away from the justice system through early intervention and positive engagement. Focused on preventing the escalation of negative behaviours, YIP offers a nurturing environment where youth can learn, grow, and make healthier choices, all at their own pace. With a foundation built on respect, honesty, and accountability, YIP serves as a crucial link between justice services and the community, providing educational and engaging activities. Referrals come from a collaborative network, including law enforcement, schools, community groups, and family services, targeting youths at risk of justice system involvement. YIP empowers these young individuals to actively participate in their growth, follow personalized plans, communicate openly, and achieve their goals, fostering a pathway to a brighter, more positive future.

Youth Reintegration

The Youth Reintegration Program (YRP) is a transformative initiative designed to support Treaty #3 First Nation youths aged 12-17 who have interacted with the justice system. By collaborating with probation officers and community partners, YRP crafts tailored reintegration plans, emphasizing cultural sensitivity, individualized attention, and positive future direction. Youth Reintegration Workers (YRWs) are at the heart of the program, offering one-on-one support to help each youth set and pursue personal goals, ensuring they receive the guidance needed to reintegrate successfully into their communities. Referrals to the program are primarily from Youth Probation Officers, though some come through court or community supervision.
